The magic of sustainability for the silver screen!

Built in 1935, and with eight locations throughout the Midlands and North East, Savoy Cinema remains one of the oldest cinema chains in the UK. Over the decades, the advance in cinematic technology has increased Savoy’s energy consumption, making renewable energy desirable.

Sustainability was something that the team at Savoy were keen to seek out, both for financial and environmental reasons. After installing solar at their Boston and Nottingham sites, the team opted for solar at the Worksop location. The continuous power required by the screens, projectors and beverage stands result in high energy bills- and the implementation of a solar PV system will decrease these utility costs.

Originally, Savoy Cinema were quoted a 190kWp solar PV system with a 139kWh battery but had also been quoted a smaller system and battery from a different renewable energy company. Wanting to ensure they were receiving the most reliable figure from a trusted source; Geo Green Power were recommended to one of Savoy Cinema’s employees by one of our team members.

Despite feeling let down by their previous system installer’s aftercare, Savoy Cinema were particularly impressed with Geo Green Power’s level of post system support following the solar and battery installation. Executive Assistant, Rebecca Rees, stated that: “We’d had a few solar panel installations previously and found that the aftercare was not so great. With Geo Green Power, we didn’t have to do anything with regards to applying for SEG tariffs. They sent through all the correct documents and managed everything for us efficiently.”

The 195kWp solar PV system and 144kWh battery unit continue to be a valuable investment for Savoy Cinema. Over 30 years, the company are estimated to save £1,500,000 and make a 21% (4-5-year payback) return on investment per annum.

Choosing to work with Geo Green Power has enabled Savoy Cinema Worksop to reduce their CO2 emissions and improve their green credentials. Their approximate output of electricity could reach 158,000kWh every year and they’re estimated to save 39 tonnes of CO2 annually, which is the equivalent to taking eight petrol cars off the road permanently.
