National Trust Goes Off Grid With Geo Green Power

With virtually no intrusion from the 21st century, Chastleton House, is a time capsule of family life from 400 years ago. Part of the National Trust since 1991 the Jacobean country house stands in a site of historical and archaeological importance and required a unique, off-grid energy solution to improve visitor experience.

On arrival at Chastleton House, visitors are now welcomed in the car park with a brand new Visitor Reception where they can access all the information they might need for their day. Powered by a 6kW solar PV system and a 10kWh energy storage facility the Visitor Reception is totally self-sustainable for power and lighting with a small back-up generator should it be needed during short and overcast days.

The National Trust’s Rebecca Farr explained: “Prior to the new building, visitors arriving at the car park could not see the house and had to follow a path all the way up to the main building before they could speak to a member of our team. We were also operating our Visitor Reception out of a very basic shed!”

“We desperately needed a site in the car park where we could welcome visitors on arrival. It had to be powered so we could access emergency systems; and it had to be powered independently as we were unable to disturb any of the landscape to lay cables.”

“We commissioned an energy efficient construction and approached Geo Green Power to provide the solar PV, battery storage and local generation. The installation was specified and installed without a hitch and we are delighted with the final result.”

Successfully powering a site office in this way has opened up huge opportunities for the National Trust to use more renewable energy in the future. It supports the charity’s ethos of limited intervention in the sites it looks after, saves money on energy bills and is considerably more cost effective than installing traditional grid connections to remote locations. If the building had been powered through a traditional connection it would have had a carbon footprint of approximately 2 tonnes per annum.
