    Heat Pump Maintenance FAQs

The premise that they require a "high amount" of servicing is a misconception; they are generally much lower in maintenance than combustion boilers. However, because they rely on moving a high volume of air or fluid through fine heat exchangers to extract energy, keeping the system clean and the pressures balanced is vital to preventing the system from working too hard and increasing your electricity bills.
Yes. Most common issues, such as faulty sensors, blocked filters, or minor electrical faults, can be repaired quickly by a specialist. Even major components like compressors or fans can be replaced, though regular maintenance is the best way to avoid the need for these more significant repairs.
A well-maintained air source or ground source heat pump typically has a lifespan of 20 to 25 years. This is significantly longer than a traditional gas boiler, which usually needs replacing every 10 to 15 years, making the heat pump a far more durable long-term investment.
A standard professional service typically takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. During this time, the engineer will perform all necessary safety and efficiency checks, clean the components, and provide you with a detailed report on the health of your system.
Heat pumps must be serviced by qualified, MCS-accredited renewable energy engineers. Because these systems use specialised refrigerants and F-Gas technology, they cannot be maintained by standard gas engineers; only technicians with specific heat pump training have the tools and knowledge to correctly calibrate and repair these units. At Geo Green Power, we’re fortunate to have Rob Jennison (Heating Installation Manager) and Yasmin Gibson (O&M Manager) with their endless heat pump expertise.
At Geo Green Power, a standard domestic heat pump service starts from £275 + VAT. This price ensures your system is handled by accredited engineers and includes a full performance report; however, the cost may vary slightly based on your location and the specific complexity or size of your installation.Polite notice: If our engineer cannot gain entry on a confirmed appointment, please be aware that you may incur an abortive fee.
Industry standards and manufacturer guidelines recommend that your heat pump is professionally serviced once every 12 months. Homeowners in coastal areas or high-pollution urban zones may benefit from more frequent checks to clear salt or debris build-up from the external heat exchanger.
Yes, while heat pumps are incredibly reliable with fewer moving parts than a boiler, they still require regular professional attention. Servicing is essential to maintain your manufacturer’s warranty, ensure the system is running at its highest possible efficiency (SCOP), and prevent minor issues from escalating into expensive mechanical failures.
A comprehensive service includes a full visual inspection of the indoor and outdoor units to check for wear, leaks, or damage. Our engineers will clean the evaporator coils and filters to ensure maximum airflow, test the electrical connections, check refrigerant levels and pressures, and verify that the control settings and thermostats are operating at peak efficiency.
Although leaves and moss rarely cause issues, as panels sit close to the roof, any debris accumulation under the panels can be dealt with by our team during a maintenance visit. If you spot moss development, inform your solar panel cleaner so they can ensure its complete and careful removal.
Birds, especially pigeons, are drawn to the sheltered, shaded, and protected space beneath solar panels for nesting. To proactively prevent this common issue, Geo Green Power can pigeon-proof your solar PV system during installation. Simply ask about this service when you book your consultation, and we will include it in your order.
Solar panels will be most efficient when the sun is hitting them directly, which is around midday. Light intensity is the most important factor when considering efficiency – when the sun is lower in the sky, light won’t be as intense, and this will reduce the output of your panels. Seasonal changes can also affect the efficiency of your panels, as during the summer, the sun shines for longer than in winter. From around May to September, your residential solar PV system will produce more energy than from October to April as the days are shorter. However, remember that solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to function. Even on cloudy days, your solar panels will still absorb light and continue to work effectively. Whatever the weather, you can benefit from energy production year-round; it will simply be more effective on sunnier days and at times when the sun is highest in the sky.
In most cases, local rainfall and the angle of installation mean that solar panels are self-cleaning. However, dust, bird droppings, tree sap, lichen and other dirt can build up, so occasionally it is worth cleaning them manually. A spray with a garden hose is often enough to remove surface dirt, or most window cleaning companies will have a reach-and-wash system that can be used to get the panels thoroughly clean quickly. We do recommend an annual service of your solar PV system, and as part of this, our team can inspect your panels and assess whether they need cleaning.
Solar panel replacement cost will depend on how easy it is for us to reach and replace a specific panel. Costs would vary from £350 + VAT for the panel and work involved.
Yes. Solar panel systems are designed so that you can easily handle solar panel replacements if required.
It’s unlikely that your panels will stop working, as there are no moving parts; a fault with your system is much more likely to be an error with your inverter. Panels do, however, stop working if they are damaged by falling objects, if they or the cabling is moved and become loose or if they become excessively dirty. All these issues can be identified during service.
Depending on how good the manufacturer is, inverters typically have a life span between 10-15 years. Fault codes on inverters vary depending on the manufacturer. Some common codes to look out for include:
    • Error 509 = No energy is being fed back to the grid. The common cause of this error is dirt or debris on your panels.
    • Error 314 = This is a calibration timeout, which should rectify itself when the inverter repeats its start-up routine.
    • Green Flashing Light = A connection issue. Once the conditions for the feed-in operation are met, the inverter will start the feed-in operation. Make sure the power supply is secure and connected to the solar PV system.
If you’re detecting any of these issues, call our maintenance team today!
Most solar panels come with a minimum 20-year warranty, so they’re truly future-proof! If there’s an issue, it’s more likely to be your inverter or power supply. The lifespan of inverters, unfortunately, isn’t as long as that of the panels. Before you report a fault, it’s worth checking a few things: Is there enough ventilation? Inverters can overheat if not provided with space to breathe. Making sure they’re not boxed in or near heat sources (radiators, etc.) is important to ensure the longevity of your inverter. Is the inverter clean and free of dust? Regularly cleaning your inverter can extend its lifespan, as dust can easily clog up the vents and cause overheating.
One easy way you can check if your panels are performing at their best is to check the estimated annual generation figure, which you can find in your MCS certificate. If this number isn’t accurate to the figure on your generation meter, then this can be a sign that there may be an issue with your system. Checking your generation figure every quarter is a great habit to get into, especially when you’re approaching the warmer months, as you’ll want your panels working at full capacity and taking advantage of the summer sun!
