Why Choose Solar for Educational Institutions?

Reinvest in Learning: With a rapid ROI typically realised in under 8 years, institutions can redirect substantial energy savings back into frontline teaching and resources.

A “Living Lab”: Transform your infrastructure into an educational tool, allowing students to engage with real-time renewable energy data and sustainability in action.

Budget Certainty: Protect your institution from volatile energy markets with fixed-cost forecasting and reliable on-site generation.

Visible Leadership: Demonstrate a tangible commitment to a low-carbon future, enhancing your institution’s reputation with parents, students, and the community.

Solar for Schools and Colleges

For many primary and secondary schools, energy bills are one of the largest non-staffing overheads. Installing solar panels for schools and colleges provides an immediate reduction in grid reliance.

We work with Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) and independent schools to design systems that fit within complex roof structures, ensuring zero disruption to term-time learning.

Many sites also choose to integrate solar panels for colleges with EV charging for staff and visitor parking, providing a sustainable infrastructure that supports the wider community.

Solar for Universities

University campuses are essentially small cities with massive, 24/7 energy demands across laboratories, lecture theatres, and student accommodation

Large-scale solar panels for university buildings allow Higher Education Institutions to monetise their existing infrastructure, such as sports hall roofs and parking lots.

Solar panels for universities play a critical role in hitting Net-Zero targets and improving “Green League” rankings, which is increasingly a deciding factor for environmentally conscious applicants.

Our team handles everything from complex multi-site array layouts to seamless integration with campus-wide energy management systems.

Our Solar Installation Process

When designing your system, our expert team meticulously evaluates several key factors:

  • The available roof or ground space for solar panels

  • Energy consumption patterns, specifically matching peak solar generation with daytime classroom use

  • The potential for battery storage to maintain power for critical IT infrastructure and security

We prioritise minimising disruption. We often schedule the core installation work during half-terms or summer holidays to ensure the safety of students and maintain an uninterrupted learning environment.

Our work with Northgate School

We completed this 16kWp solar PV installation for Northgate School, Northampton on a brand new teaching block. We coordinated our installation with the existing construction schedule, using existing scaffold and access to keep installation costs to a minimum.

  • This system is now generating 13,500 kWh of electricity and saving over 4 tonnes of CO2 every year.
  • Through energy bill savings alone, this system will deliver a full payback in under 5 years.

Green energy for Coventry University

We have completed solar panel installations for five Coventry University sites, including this roof mounted system on a green roof at The Hub. The project involved installing nearly 800 panels to help meet its net zero carbon target by 2030.

  • We have installed a total of 361.28 kWp for Coventry University.
  • Together these system will generate enough energy to power 90 homes and save around 95 tonnes of CO2 a year.

How Much Does Solar for Educational Facilities Cost?

Every project is unique, and the required investment will vary based on the scale of the campus and specific roof types.

Education Sector Funding & Financing Options

Salix Finance & PSDS (State-Funded Schools)

For public sector institutions, Salix Finance remains the primary gateway for energy funding.

Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS): Phase 4 and 5 grants provide capital for projects that combine solar PV with heat decarbonisation (like heat pumps). This is ideal for schools looking to replace ageing boilers while installing solar.

Salix Interest-Free Loans: Available for maintained schools and academies in England, these loans are “cash-neutral”; the repayments are calculated to be covered by the energy savings generated by your new solar panels.

Capex & Capital Allowances (Ideal for Private/Independent Schools)

For institutions with available reserves, an upfront capital expenditure (Capex) investment offers the highest long-term Return on Investment (ROI).

Annual Investment Allowance (AIA): Private schools can often deduct 100% of the installation cost from taxable profits in the first year, providing an immediate and significant tax shield.

Full Ownership: You retain 100% of the energy savings and Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) revenue from day one, typically seeing a full payback within 5–8 years.

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)

The “zero upfront cost” model is perfect for schools that want the benefits of solar without the initial capital outlay.

Fully Funded: A third-party finances, installs, and maintains the system on your roof.

Lower Bills: You simply buy the generated electricity from the provider at a rate significantly lower than the national grid.

Private Wire PPAs: If your campus has multiple buildings or adjacent land, we can set up a “private wire” to supply green energy directly to your high-demand areas (like science labs or sports centres), bypassing grid distribution charges entirely.

Asset Finance

If you want to eventually own the system but prefer to keep your capital liquid, asset finance allows you to spread the cost.

Fixed Payments: Regular payments for 5–10 years, which are usually offset by the reduction in your monthly energy bills.

Ownership at Term-End: Unlike a PPA, once the final payment is made, the school owns the asset outright and enjoys free electricity for the remainder of the panels’ 25+ year lifespan

FAQs

How long do solar panel installations for schools take?

The amount of time it takes to install solar panels depends on the size and the type of roof. Our site team aims to get jobs done as efficiently and quickly as they can to avoid disruption.

Our Geo Green Power team remains available during school holidays, meaning that an installation can take place out of school time with zero distraction.

Will we have to get planning permission?

Not in the vast majority of cases. However, if you want your system ground-mounted, if your property is part of a World Heritage Site, or is listed, then planning permission would likely have to be sought in advance.

We would advise that when this was the case, and while you would have to seek such permission, we will, of course, provide full assistance in completing applications and supplying any information requested to ensure the process is as quick and easy as possible.

What kind of educational opportunities do solar panel installations provide?

Solar panel installations allow students to expand their knowledge in the environmental and energy fields. Subjects such as Geography, Science, and Technology can incorporate solar panel information into their lessons and use the installation as a focus point.

How do solar panels benefit your school financially?

Solar panels will reduce a school’s electricity bills, meaning that schools will have extra funding to spend on classroom supplies, staffing costs, and extracurricular activities.

What are the expected lifespan and maintenance requirements for solar panels?

Most solar panels last between 25 and 30 years and require an annual service. Book Yours Today.

What are the environmental benefits of installing solar panels at your school?

Solar panel installations can significantly reduce a school’s carbon footprint, and this will improve its green credentials. The system can also act as an opportunity to educate students on environmental issues and their sustainable solutions.

Will the installation process disrupt school activities or require any structural changes?

Our team specialises in solar installations for high-traffic public environments, including active school campuses. We prioritise rigorous site management, focusing on controlled access, public safety, and noise mitigation to minimise disruption.

While we frequently schedule school projects during holiday periods, our entire site team holds Enhanced DBS checks, allowing us to work safely and effectively during term time whenever necessary.
