Why choose Geo Green Power for your school’s solar panel installation?

Since 2010, we have been dedicated to designing and installing high-quality commercial solar power systems, with extensive experience in the education sector. Having carried our installations at all kinds of educational setting – including schools, colleges and universities – all of our installation team members are enhanced CRB checked and fully qualified in all aspects of their roles.

We specialise in working on projects at premises that need to remain open to the public throughout the installation and can effectively install your panels around the school day. By operating multiple installation teams we also have the flexibility to accommodate installations during holiday periods.

We would encourage any school to investigate the huge opportunities that solar panels and battery storage can offer them and are happy to discuss different options for your facility and provide a free no obligation quote.

Our aim with projects in the education sector is to deliver an effective solar energy scheme and a real learning experience for all involved.

Why should you upgrade your school with solar power?

Installing a solar panel system for a school or educational institution allows that setting to thrive in a number of ways.

As soon as a solar PV system is commissioned, energy bills are reduced and savings can be distributed to other areas including extra-curricular activities, classroom materials, and extra staff support. Depending on the size of the systems £1,000s could be saved every year providing, long-term savings that can become additional funding for these key areas.

Solar panels continue to generate for over 25 years and require little maintenance due to them having few moving parts. Their longevity protects your school from increasing energy prices.

The visible improvement of your school’s environmental benefits will increase your student’s knowledge and awareness of sustainability. Your solar panels provide the chance for your school to educate students further and expand their learning opportunities regarding solar energy. The reputation of your school will also be enhanced by your green credentials and an obvious commitment to sustainable practices.

Our work with Northgate School

We completed this 16kWp solar PV installation for Northgate School, Northampton on a brand new teaching block. We coordinated our installation with the existing construction schedule, using existing scaffold and access to keep installation costs to a minimum.

  • This system is now generating 13,500 kWh of electricity and saving over 4 tonnes of CO2 every year.
  • Through energy bill savings alone, this system will deliver a full payback in under 5 years.

Green energy for Coventry University

We have completed solar panel installations for five Coventry University sites, including this roof mounted system on a green roof at The Hub. The project involved installing nearly 800 panels to help meet its net zero carbon target by 2030.
Toby Carvery Swindon
  • We have installed a total of 361.28 kWp for Coventry University.
  • Together these system will generate enough energy to power 90 homes and save around 95 tonnes of CO2 a year.

How much will it cost?

As so many factors determine the cost of a solar panel installation, it’s difficult to provide an estimate.

The size and type of roof play huge roles in establishing the price of an installation, as does your existing electrical installation and access requirements.

If you’re considering a solar PV installation for your school or college we can discuss the options available, providing a straightforward estimation of costs, timescales, generation and longterm savings.

Grants and funding options for schools

Great British Energy Grants for Schools

In March 2025 the UK government launched a £200 million initiative to install rooftop solar panels on schools and NHS sites across the country through Great British Energy.

The initiative prioritises schools in areas with high social need, such as the North East, West Midlands, and North West of England. Hundreds of school are set to benefit, with at least 10 schools from each region will be chosen, including one further education college that will collaborate with solar installers to promote careers in renewable technologies.

This project aims to cut energy costs, promote sustainability and support the education sector and £80 million has been allocated for schools. The first solar panel installations are expected to be completed by the end of summer 2025, ensuring savings for the next academic year.

Schools could save up to £25,000 annually on energy bills, with lifetime savings of up to £400 million across all sites

By generating and using their own clean, renewable energy, schools will reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the UK's energy independence and Net Zero plans

The initiative includes partnerships with further education colleges to provide students with green skills training, fostering careers in the renewable energy sector

The Smart Export Guarantee

Once solar PV panels are installed, schools can apply for the Smart Export Guarantee – a Government-backed initiative that pays solar PV generators a tariff for the surplus electricity that is exported back to the grid. The tariff is then paid by the setting’s chosen SEG Licensees (electricity providers).

To be eligible for this scheme, a school’s system size must be under 5MW. They must also have an MCS Certificate (or equivalent), DNO approval, and a meter capable of recording half-hourly data. Since schools are commercial projects, Geo Green Power will be able to manage this process to ensure all eligibility areas are covered.

Other funding options

Schools associated with an Academy Trust or religious institution may be able to access specific funding through these organisations.

Due to the significant savings that can be achieved with solar, schools can also find their own ways of contributing towards the initial cost of a solar panel installation, such as organising fundraising events or crowdfunding. As well as helping the school financially, this type of experience is another useful way to further educate students, parents and the community on the sustainable cause.

How long do solar panel installations for schools take?

The amount of time solar panels would take to install depends on the size and the type of the roof. Our site team aim to get jobs done as efficiently and quickly as they can to avoid disruption.

Our Geo Green Power team remain available during school holidays, meaning that an installation can take place out of school time with zero distraction.

Warranty and maintenance

Your solar panels will need an annual maintenance check to ensure there aren’t any issues with your system. Geo Green Power will contact you a month before your installation is due a service to book you in and then carry out the checks themselves.

Solar for schools FAQs

Will I have to get planning permission?

Not in the vast majority of cases. However if you want your system ground mounted, if your school, college or university is part of a world heritage site, or is listed, then planning permission would likely have to be sought in advance. We will provide full assistance in completing applications and supplying any information requested to ensure the process is as quick and easy as possible.

Fore more helpful information see our Solar Panel FAQ’s page.

What kind of educational opportunities do solar panel installations provide?

Solar panel installations allow students to expand their knowledge in the environmental and energy fields. Subjects such as Geography, Science, and Technology can incorporate solar panel information into their lessons and use their installation as a focus point.

How do solar panels benefit your school financially?

Solar panels will reduce a school’s electricity bills- meaning that schools will have extra funding to spend on classroom supplies, staffing costs, and extra-curriculum activities.

What is the expected lifespan and maintenance requirements for the solar panels?

Most solar panels last between 25-30 years and require an annual service.

What are the environmental benefits of installing solar panels at your school?

Solar panel installations can significantly reduce a school’s carbon footprint and this will improve it’s green credentials. The system can also act as an opportunity to educate students on environmental issues and it’s sustainable solutions.

Will the installation process disrupt school activities or require any structural changes?

Our site team ensure that they cause as minimal disruption as possible when installing solar panels. Scaffolding will be required, so the focused area will likely be cornered off for safety reasons. If you have any big events or activities approaching and need a clear space, don’t hesitate to let our team know and we can arrange to carry out the installation out of term time.
