Brake friction solutions manufacturer paves the way for a sustainable future
Leaders in Brake Friction Solutions
TMD Friction, a global leader in brake friction solutions for the automotive and brake industries, has taken decisive action to strengthen its green credentials at its Hartlepool manufacturing site.
For TMD Friction, sustainability is a strategic priority, and at the heart of its global strategy is the “Sustainability Roadmap 2040”, which outlines clear environmental goals. One objective is to power all facilities globally with 100% renewable energy by 2030. As a global leader in brake friction manufacturing, TMD Friction is committed to driving change and pioneering a more sustainable brake industry.
The brief was clear: deliver a large-scale, high-performing solar installation without compromising safety, quality, or day-to-day operations.

Accelerating a Solution
Geo Green Power designed and delivered a complex 668kWp rooftop solar PV system, making it one of Geo Green Power’s largest installations of 2025.
Key elements of the solution included:
- A mammoth 1,468 solar panels installed across the site, 2,933m2 of roof space.
- Integration across two different roof types, requiring two specialist roof mounting systems
- Enhanced health and safety measures, exceeding standard industry practice, due to TMD Friction’s strict health and safety procedures.
Given the scale and complexity of the site, Geo Green Power implemented additional safety controls, including the use of a specialist roof system over rooflights, reducing fall risk during installation and future maintenance.
“This project set a new benchmark for on-site safety. We implemented enhanced controls beyond standard requirements, particularly around roof access and rooflight protection. Health and safety is never an afterthought at Geo Green Power – it’s designed into every installation from day one.”
Graham Templeton, SHEQ Manager, Geo Green Power
This safety-first approach ensured the project was delivered efficiently, responsibly, and with minimal disruption to TMD Friction’s operations.

Speeding to Deliver Results
The installation has delivered immediate and long-term benefits, transforming energy from a fixed cost into a strategic asset.
Annual generation: Approximately 590,000kWh of clean, renewable electricity, covering around 6% of the site’s total energy demand. Enough to fully charge nearly 10,000 EVs every year.
Sustainability impact: Significant reduction in carbon emissions and enhanced environmental credentials. The installation will reduce the site’s carbon emissions by approximately 150 tonnes per year.
By investing in solar PV, TMD Friction has made a visible commitment to sustainable manufacturing, reinforcing its position as an industry leader in both performance and responsibility.

Mark Adams, Global HSE Manager at TMD Friction, said:
“Geo Green Power were excellent to work with. They took the time to properly understand our internal health and safety requirements and worked closely with us throughout to make sure every stage of the installation was carried out to our high standards, not just their own. On a live manufacturing site, that level of diligence is essential. We’re really pleased with the outcome and proud that we have been able to deliver a project of this scale without compromising on our strict health and safety procedures.”
