As one of two surgeries in Coventry serving over 13,000 patients, Broad Street Surgery plays a vital role in its local community. With patient numbers continuing to rise and healthcare demands increasing, the practice faces the same growing challenge as many others across the NHS, how to manage rising energy costs while maintaining quality care.
Across the NHS, this challenge is significant. The latest NHS Estates Returns Information Collection (ERIC) reports that in 2023-24, the NHS in England consumed 11.1 billion kWh of energy, including 2.7 billion kWh of electricity. Despite electricity usage rising by just 1%, costs surged 20% to £769 million in a single year, with total energy spending more than doubling since 2019.
For Broad Street Surgery, these rising costs underscored the importance of investing in a sustainable, long-term solution that would reduce dependence on the grid, stabilise operating costs, and help meet national net-zero goals, all without disrupting patient services.
A Carefully Planned Solar Installation for a Live Healthcare Site
Geo Green Power designed and installed a 25kWp solar PV system on the surgery’s roof, optimised to make the most of available space and maximise on-site generation. The new system will produce around 21,000kWh of clean electricity every year, helping to power lighting, medical equipment, and IT systems with renewable energy.
Because the surgery needed to remain open throughout, the project required meticulous planning and coordination.
