At Red House Farm in Doncaster, Geo Green Power has completed a “hat trick” of installations, progressively building a massive 1,088kWp solar PV system across three phases (2021, 2022, and 2024).

Selecting Solar for the Farm

Red House Farm, situated in Doncaster, truly understands the power of solar having now invested in three separate systems, all installed by Geo Green Power. After an initial 180kWp roof mounted system in 2021, Michael Woolhouse has grown renewable energy generation at his farm with a further 158kWp roof mounted system in 2022 and a 750kWp ground mount installation in 2024.

Woolhouse was already using renewable technology to diversify his farm operation. Red House Farm is home to M&T Haylage and produces high-quality hay and haylage for the global equine market using a ground source heat pump to heat barns to dry the grass products. Woolhouse was keen to investigate another source of renewable energy to improve the farm’s sustainability adding:

“I knew that solar would work well alongside the existing ground-source heat pump and there would be a good return on investment from using our own energy, generated on site, to run the heat pump rather than purchasing this energy from the grid.”

As farms diversify and invest in new technology, they require an increasingly high amount of energy and have high utility costs as a result. Commercial solar panel installations are often hugely beneficial to farm operations and easy to install because of the availability of land and existing buildings.

Working with Our Team

After exploring his solar options, Woolhouse was put in touch with Geo Green Power for his first installation. A discussion with our Managing Director, James Cunningham, left him feeling impressed with the level of knowledge displayed and comfortable with our non-pushy sales approach- leading Woolhouse to proceed with three separate solar energy installations.

For each of the installations at Red House Farm, our dedicated Geo Green Power site team was allocated to the project and completed each installation. The 750kWp ground mount system, the largest of the three, was efficiently project managed from initial design and planning through to installation and commissioning with strong communication throughout. Woolhouse added:

“Planning and communication was key to the success of each project as the farm had to stay operational throughout, with regular movement of large farm machinery and the continuous process of drying, moving and storing our hay products through the barns.”

The Project’s Results

All three solar PV systems total 1,088kWp and are estimated to generate 1,000,000kWh of energy and save 250 tonnes of CO2 every year. This is the equivalent to taking 50 petrol cars off the road permanently.

On how he’s finding the installation, Woolhouse stated that:

“The systems are working very well and I’m extremely pleased with the results. I can’t wait to continue seeing the positive impact the panels will have on the farm.”
