Renewable Heat Incentive

The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme is applicable to a variety of technologies including solar, ground and air source heat pumps, biomass boilers and more.

The RHI was established to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies amongst householders, communities and businesses. The scheme offers cash payments over a period of 7 or 20 years depending on whether you qualify for the domestic or commercial tariffs. In the majority of cases, these payments cover the installation costs.

 

Would I qualify for the Commercial or Domestic RHI tariff?

  • If your system provides heat to a single dwelling you qualify for the domestic tariff
  • If you are providing heating for a minimum of two dwellings and/or commercial premises you qualify for the commercial tariff

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps have experienced a recent surge in interest among commercial operators. Replacing conventional heating and taking advantage of the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) schemes, it’s an attractive solution to lower your fuel bills and your carbon emissions.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use a network of pipes buried underground to extract heat. Using a mixture of water and antifreeze around a ‘ground loop’ of pipe, the heat from the ground is transferred through the fluid and passed via a heat exchanger into the heat pump. It’s a simple, reliable and efficient system.

Since the underground temperature stays relatively constant through the year, heat pumps can be used without disruption. What’s more, GSHPs require no fuel deliveries while there is minimal maintenance required for the system once it has been installed.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pump technology has been around for many years and is very reliable and efficient; is operates using the same principle as refrigerators, just in reverse.

Air source heat pumps absorb warmth from the air to heat homes and work spaces. Even when outside temperatures reach -20, an air source heat pump can efficiently heat radiators, underfloor heating, warm air convectors and hot water. Because they absorb heat directly from the air, you do not need large areas of outside space to lay ground loops and they’re the perfect option for built up areas.

Air source heat pumps can also be configured to provide air conditioning in warmer months, making them an even more cost effective alternative to conventional heating and air conditioning technologies.

Biomass Boilers

Biomass boilers are an environmentally sound, sustainable heating solution for both residential buildings and commercial premises. The system is based on burning biomass, e.g. wood pellets or logs, which emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as is absorbed while the plants were growing. That’s why biomass is classed as a carbon neutral renewable heating solution.

Biomass boilers are designed to burn biomass fuels with a high degree of efficiency, using the energy thus produced to provide both heating and hot water. Particularly in areas where mains gas is not available, biomass boilers can be more cost effective and efficient than traditional fossil fuel boilers.
