Solar PV Installation Process

Initial Enquiry

Customers can send an initial enquiry using our online form, via our online Live Chat, over the phone or they can simply send an email. Either way, we’re delighted that you have thought of us!

Follow-up Call

After receiving an initial enquiry, our surveyors will either call or send a customer information form to gain some more information on your project and the property. They will also view the site via satellite.

It’s essential for our team to understand your current electricity costs, energy usage and the space available for solar panels to determine the size of the system required and whether it will meet your objectives.

If the project is progressing we’ll arrange a survey to visit the site and discuss the installation further. We’ll look at the roof and external space and assess the best location for the layout of panels, the inverters and the cable run.

A site visit enables us to understand the project in more detail and assess the costs involved. This is also a perfect opportunity for a thorough discussion about products and warranties and a chance for you to ask lots of questions.

Once the on-site survey is completed, our surveyor will discuss the project with the rest of the team, feedback on any queries raised during the site visit and provide a personalised quote for you to consider.

Once we receive the go-ahead your project is handed over to our operations team and we begin making your renewable energy plans a reality.

Planning and District Network Operator Permissions

For normal domestic properties, there is no requirement to gain planning permission, as long as the property is not a listed building or in a conservative area; and the installation sticks to the guidelines. Standalone panels can also be installed without seeking planning permission, although the size of the array is limited to 9m2, and 4m tall. The array must also be at least 5m from the property.

In general, the requirements for commercial installations are the same as domestic installations, however, we can provide specific advice about your individual situation as necessary. Our team will manage all of the planning requirements on your behalf. This will include local planning applications and liaising with your DNO to enable you to connect your system to the electricity network.

Pre-Installation Survey

Two lead members of our technical team will visit your site to specify scaffolding and access equipment, agree on the installation process and ensure that when we come to install we have everything we need. Any issues highlighted during the initial survey will be carefully considered and a plan or resolution agreed upon with you. This could be an alternative cable route or a slight modification to the design.

When booking the pre-installation survey you’ll be given an indicative installation date and following our visit we will be able to confirm this with you.

A week or so before your installation our scheduling team will contact you to confirm that everything is still on track and confirm start dates, any deliveries, and if required the erection of scaffolding.

Throughout the installation, our scheduling team will be on hand, and a site contact will also keep you posted on how we are progressing. We aim for the process to be as smooth as possible from start to finish using our considerable experience of installing Solar PV for over 10 years.

Commission and Handover

On the final day of the installation, one of our team will walk you through the system and explain how everything works. You will also be registered for online monitoring if this is something that you have opted for.

Following completion, our electricians will provide a detailed schematic, which will outline the new system and the positioning of the solar PV components. You will also receive a copy of the electrical certificate, a solar array test report and a full Operations & Maintenance Manual. If your scheme qualifies, you will receive a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificate within two or three days of us registering your installation.

Follow-up and After Care

Your full installation will be under warranty for 2 years; should you encounter any issues or concerns you can contact the team and we will be happy to resolve them either over the phone or return to the site as required.

We recommend an annual service and system check to ensure that your system remains in full working order!

What our customers say

Pairing your solar panels with battery storage

Solar battery storage is a key component in maximizing the efficiency of solar panels for residential energy generation. During daylight hours, solar panels capture and convert sunlight into electricity, with any excess energy stored in a solar battery for later use. This stored energy becomes a valuable resource, providing power after sunset or during cloudy periods, thereby ensuring a consistent energy supply without relying on the grid.

By combining solar panels with battery banks, users can optimize their energy consumption, reducing reliance on grid power and often achieving cost savings compared to exporting surplus energy. This integrated approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to substantial savings on electricity bills, making solar panels and batteries a compelling solution for sustainable and economical residential energy usage.

With a battery PV system Estimated savings over a year Estimated savings over 30 years
5kWh 3.6kW £888 £39,934
5kWh 5kW £1,108 £45,558
15kWh 9kW £2,116 £86,984
23kWh 17kW £8,050 £454,090
Without a battery PV system Estimated savings over a year Estimated savings over 30 years
5kWh 3.6kW £799 £34,244
5kWh 5kW £901 £37,022
15kWh 9kW £1,852 £76,111
23kWh 17kW £7,032 £392,728

(Please note that the 30 years savings statistics are likely to have changed because inflation of electric unit prices was higher at the point of quoting).

How long does a solar PV Installation take?

Summarized below are typical install timeframes for different-sized systems:

Up to 6kW – 1 day

Up to 50kW – 3 – 4 days

Up to 100 kW – 5 to 7 days

Over 250kW – 2 weeks plus

Where Can You Install Solar Panels?

You may have only ever seen solar panels installed on roofs. There are four ways that panels can be installed on your roof:

  • Flat Roof – for flat roofs, panels can be laid in tubs or on frames to ensure that they achieve the correct elevations to maximise sunlight.
  • Pitched Roof – pitched roofs are perfect for solar and depending on the direction in which they face, standard metal fixing frames are used to hold panels in place directly on top of the existing roof tiles or surface.
  • In-Roof – if you are in the process of fitting a new roof, you can save on material and labour costs by installing in-roof solar. An in-roof system replaces a section of tiles and lies flush with the overall surface of the roof. In-roof solar installations are perfect for new build and renovation projects.
  • Solar Slate – if you own a listed property solar slate tiles are an option. These solar installations have the appearance of a standard slate tile roof and the ability to generate solar power.
  • Façade – An alternative to a roof installation, solar panels can also be integrated into the façade of your building.

For large-scale commercial installations, we often install at ground level, if the roof space isn’t large enough or suitable. This is ideal if you have sufficient space that can capture as much sunlight as possible. This may also be possible for domestic properties, although it is always dependent on whether the panels can get enough sunlight to make them worthwhile.

  • Tubs – ground mount tubs enable you to achieve a low-profile ground-mounted solution and they work well with smaller and domestic installations.
  • Frame – most large-scale ground-mounted systems use frames to deliver the best elevation. On agricultural land, increased ground clearance allows for additional use, giving poultry and other livestock the freedom to roam freely.

How long does it take for a solar panel system to receive a payback?

The payback you receive from a solar PV system can depend on a range of variables from the size and position of the solar array, the location of the property, your cost of electricity, and how much of the generated power is consumed on site.

Investing in generating your own electricity secures a portion of your energy supply at a cost that’s set for the life of your system (at least 25 years), providing energy price security that can not be achieved any other way.

Boost Your Usage With Batteries

You may also be interested in battery backup and storage to support your solar panel array. Having a battery in place allows you to store any surplus power generated during the day, which can then be used at a later time when the panels are not producing electricity.

We offer a full range of solar batteries from renowned brands including Tesla, Sunny Boy, Symo and more. If you would like to have batteries installed this can be carried out at the same time as your solar panel installation.

Solar Panel Maintenance Requirements

Solar panels typically require very little in the way of maintenance. They have no moving parts and typically generate electricity without a reduction in efficiency for many years. However, to ensure your panels remain in the best possible condition and run effectively, we recommend yearly servicing.

This yearly servicing includes an inspection of the electrical hardware, cabling, mountings and panels and recommends any cleaning or maintenance requirements. We will also carry out electrical testing, and clean the heat sink and filters.

Pigeon Proofing

Pigeons often build their nests in awkward locations, and one of the areas that they can favour is underneath solar panels as it’s shaded and offers protection against the elements.

During your solar installation we can pigeon-proof your panels, just ask us when making your enquiry and we can add it to your order. We are unable to retrofit pigeon proofing but have created a guide on recommendations to help you deal with pigeons.

“So, once we’ve received your inquiry, you will get a call back from one of our surveyors, who will be able to discuss your project more thoroughly with you. They’ll talk about energy consumption, the kind of property that we’d be installing on, they’ll have a look at it on a satellite view, and they will glean the kind of benefits you want to get out of your project.

“If it’s progressing nicely and you like the sound of what you are hearing, then we would book in a site survey for one of our surveyors to come out and discuss the project in more detail with you in person.

“If we’ve got to the stage where we’ve booked in a survey, we will come to your property, we will look at things like your incoming electrical supply, condition of your roof, size system, costs, and we’ll be able to take all of this information back to the office to be able to provide you with a formal quotation.

“Once we have provided you with your quotation you are happy to proceed with that quotation when you sign your customer order form. It would come back into the office, and it will get passed over to our installation teams, we would then be in contact with the next steps, such as booking your pre-installation survey.

“Once we have carried out your pre-installation survey and we have designed your system, we will then be in touch to give you your installation dates. As well as any dates for scaffold erection and plant higher delivery, as well as a delivery schedule for your panels, inverters and any other kit that has been delivered to the site.

“During your installation, we will be on hand, here in the office to answer any questions that you might have throughout the installation process. On the last day of your installation, we will give you a full walkthrough and handover of your system and explain how it works!

“Once you’ve received all your paperwork, we do provide a workmanship warranty for a year after installation, so if you have any questions or queries or problems related to your system in that year, please do always feel free to get in contact with us.”
