What are the benefits & considerations of an ASHP installation?
Financial & Environmental Advantages (Benefits)
Reduced Carbon Footprint: ASHPs are a significantly more sustainable choice than traditional heating systems as they produce substantially less carbon dioxide, actively lowering your home’s environmental impact.
Long-Term Cost-Effectiveness: Although the initial installation cost can be high, ASHPs represent a wise long-term investment. Their high energy efficiency and minimal maintenance requirements ensure substantial cost savings over the system’s lifetime.
Government Grants Available: To support the UK’s Net Zero ambitions, the government currently offers grants of up to £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This grant is available to homeowners replacing a fossil fuel system with an ASHP or similar low-carbon alternative. Installing a heat pump as the primary heat source in a self-build also qualifies.
Compliance with Regulations: Many new construction projects are now required to incorporate low-carbon heating solutions, such as ASHPs, to meet contemporary planning regulations.
Installation & Suitability Factors (Considerations)
Property Suitability: It is crucial to assess your home’s suitability before installation. Older or less-insulated properties may first require insulation and draught-proofing upgrades to ensure the ASHP operates efficiently.
System Upgrades: Homeowners may need to install larger radiators and new pipework to correctly accommodate the lower operating temperature of an ASHP system.
Is your property suitable for an ASHP?
There are many great reasons to choose to have an ASHP installed at your property.
Insulation
For an ASHP to operate at peak efficiency, the property must be well-insulated. In certain older properties, insulation upgrades may be a prerequisite for installing the heat pump.
Access to mains gas
Properties connected to the mains gas network are suitable for an ASHP installation. However, homeowners switching from less efficient sources like oil, LPG, or electric heating systems will typically see a faster and greater return on their investment.
Planning permission
In most cases, Air Source Heat Pump installations do not require planning permission, provided the installation fully complies with established permitted development criteria.
Heat emitter consideration
ASHPs perform most efficiently with low-flow temperature systems, making underfloor heating an ideal partner. While traditional radiators can be retained, their size and capacity must be carefully assessed and potentially adjusted to accommodate the ASHP’s operating temperature.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation Process in the Derby Area
Installing an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) in your Derby home is a straightforward process, typically requiring around five working days from start to final commissioning. Unlike Ground Source Heat Pump installations, no extensive groundworks are needed, making the process like fitting a traditional boiler system.
External Unit Placement: The ASHP unit will be securely fitted to the outside of your property in a location that ensures good airflow and is free from obstruction. These units are typically compact, sized around 1 meter wide, 1 meter high, and 30 centimetres deep.
Secure Mounting: The unit is securely fastened using bolts to the ground or brackets mounted directly to the external wall of the building.
Internal Connection: Once the outdoor unit is in place, it is connected to the hot water cylinder inside your home. Depending on your existing setup, the ASHP may integrate seamlessly with your current water tank with minimal alteration.
Radiator Assessment: As part of the installation in Derby properties, an assessment will be made on your existing heat emitters. Larger radiator units may be required to replace older models to ensure the system operates efficiently at lower flow temperatures.
Due to their design with very few moving parts, ASHPs require less intensive ongoing maintenance compared to traditional heating systems. For optimal efficiency and longevity, we strongly recommend an annual service checkup.
From your initial enquiry in the Derby area through to the long-term servicing and maintenance of your ASHP, Geo Green Power is on hand to answer all your questions and guide you through every step of the installation process.
ASHP installation costs
There are lots of variables influencing the price of heat pumps and every install has to be priced individually. Below is a table displaying the approximate prices different sized installs would cost. Please note that these prices don’t include the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) grant of £7,500.
| Size of install | Estimated cost |
| Small | £10,000 |
| Medium | £12,000 |
| Large | £20,000 |
We recommend an annual service of an air source system every twelve months to ensure it’s operating as efficiently as possible. Some manufacturers will ask for up-to-date service records in the event of a warranty claim. The servicing starts from £275+VAT.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Grant
The Boiler Upgrade scheme is a government-backed scheme for installing a heat pump. The owner of the system gets a voucher for up to £7500 towards the cost of the install if a fossil fuel heat source is being replaced or if the property has never had a heating system.
Geo Green Power claim on eligible customer’s behalf and manage the process throughout.
Air Source Heat Pump savings vs gas boiler
The running costs of an air source heat pump wouldn’t differ too much from those of a Gas Boiler – although the heat pump would be cheaper to run in teh longterm. The motivation to retrofit a heat pump would normally be driven by a desire to reduce your carbon footprint and/or to futureproof against the inevitable rise in fossil fuel costs.
With a new build, planning rules will often insist on heat pumps being installed. In this instance, the installation costs are not much higher than that of an installation of a gas boiler, especially if no gas supply is needed to the property.
If coupled with solar PV or a battery, then air source heat pumps can become incredibly efficient and cheap to run – sometimes costing nothing at all.
A recent ASHP installation
When Paul moved into his home in East Leake he discovered that the best option for replacing the 45-year-old oil boiler was an air-source heat pump. Paul carefully compared the cost of replacing the old oil boiler with an up-to-date condensing oil boiler or an air source heat pump system. He found that thanks to the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, the installation costs were almost identical, and the heat pump would deliver lower running costs and have a much more positive environmental impact.
