The Benefits of a Premium Home Solar Battery

Integrating solar battery storage into your Midlands property offers more than just backup power; it changes how you consume energy.

Maximise Self-Consumption: Without a home solar power battery system, most households only use about 20-35% of the energy they generate. With a battery, you can use up to 80-100%.

Lower Energy Bills: By using a domestic solar battery storage system to store energy during the day, you avoid paying peak grid prices in the evening.

Energy Independence: Protect your home from rising utility costs and grid instability with a reliable home solar power battery storage solution.

Carbon Footprint Reduction: Using every drop of your renewable energy reduces your reliance on fossil fuel-heavy grid power.

Smart Energy Management: Modern residential solar power battery storage systems allow you to monitor and manage your usage via smartphone apps.

Elevate Your Solar Investment

Geo Green Power goes beyond simple solar batteries; we engineer sophisticated, fully integrated energy ecosystems by uniting:

Energy in Harmony

These technologies are built to work in synergy: your solar array produces the clean electricity required to run your heat pump for sustainable heating, while any excess power is stored in your battery or funnelled directly into your electric vehicle.

Why Integrate?

By unifying these systems, you maximise your self-consumption and drastically slash your dependence on the National Grid. This approach ensures that every kilowatt of energy harvested from your roof is working for you, powering your appliances, heating your water, and fueling your commute.

Financing Options for Your Energy Journey

We believe renewable energy should be accessible to everyone. Geo Green Power provide the highest quality kit, from the world’s leading manufacturers.

Competitive Rates: Low-interest options tailored to your budget.

Pay from Savings: In many cases, monthly energy savings can cover a significant portion of the finance payment.

Finance Options: Available through Phoenix for battery installation

Premium battery storage installation is now available with finance options through Phoenix Financial Consultants Ltd

Home Battery Storage Without Solar

You don’t need solar panels to benefit from solar batteries. Many of our Midlands customers choose home battery storage without solar to take advantage of “load shifting.”

By installing a SolarEdge solar battery and signing up for a smart time-of-use tariff (like Octopus Flux or Economy 7), your domestic solar battery will automatically charge overnight when electricity is at its cheapest and greenest. You then use that stored energy during the day, effectively bypassing high peak-time rates.

Solar Battery FAQs

Lifespan & Sizing

How long do solar batteries last?

Most modern lithium-ion solar batteries last between 10 and 15 years, depending on usage and cycle frequency. They typically come with a warranty that guarantees a certain level of capacity after a decade of use.

What size solar battery do I need?

An average UK home typically requires a battery between 5kWh and 10kWh to cover evening demand. To find your exact size, match the capacity for your daily evening energy consumption and the output of your solar array.

How big are solar batteries?

Most units are roughly the size of a small radiator or a medium-sized suitcase, though dimensions vary by brand. High-capacity systems or modular units may require more wall or floor space in your garage or utility room.

Installation & Location

Can solar batteries go in the loft?

While technically possible, it is generally not recommended due to extreme temperature fluctuations and weight restrictions. Proper ventilation and structural reinforcement are essential if you choose a loft installation.

Can solar batteries be installed inside or outside?

Batteries can be installed inside (utility rooms or garages) or outside, provided they have a high enough IP rating for weatherproofing. For outdoor units, a sheltered spot is best to protect the system from direct sunlight and extreme cold.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes, you can add a battery using an AC-coupled inverter that works alongside your current setup. Alternatively, you can replace your existing inverter with a “hybrid” model that manages both panels and storage.

Can I install my own solar battery?

It is legal to DIY to install, but strongly discouraged because you may lose your manufacturer’s warranty and eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Most UK energy suppliers require an MCS-certified installation to pay you for exported energy.

Charging & Usage

Can I charge my solar battery with off-peak electricity?

Yes, most smart batteries allow you to “force charge” from the grid during cheap off-peak hours (like overnight). This allows you to use low-cost electricity during the day, even if there isn’t enough sunlight.

Can I use a solar battery while it's charging?

Yes, modern systems are designed to simultaneously charge and discharge, prioritising your home’s needs first. If the panels generate more than the home uses, the excess goes into the battery while the home is powered.

Do solar batteries work during a power outage?

Only if your system is installed with an emergency power supply (EPS) or “island” mode. Standard solar systems automatically shut down during a blackout for grid safety unless this specific backup gateway is added.

Do you need a battery with solar panels?

No, you can use solar panels alone and export excess energy to the grid. However, a battery helps you save more money by storing that excess energy for use at night instead of buying it back.

Technical Connections

How to connect solar panels to a battery?

Solar panels connect to a charge controller or hybrid inverter, which regulates the voltage before sending power to the battery. You should never connect panels directly to a battery without a controller to manage the flow.

Can I connect a solar panel directly to a battery?

You should avoid connecting them directly as the unregulated voltage from the panel can overcharge and permanently damage the battery. A charge controller is essential to safely step down the voltage.

Can solar panels overcharge a battery?

They can if there is no charge controller or smart inverter to stop the flow once the battery is full. Modern home storage systems include these safety features to prevent overcharging automatically.

Can solar panels drain batteries at night?

No, modern solar systems use blocking diodes or smart controllers to prevent “reverse current.” This ensures energy only flows from the panels to the battery, not the other way around.

Safety & Environment

Are solar batteries safe?

Yes, when professionally installed, home batteries are extremely safe and built to strict UK fire and electrical standards. Most use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, which is highly stable and resistant to overheating.

Can solar batteries catch fire?

While extremely rare, fires can occur if a battery is physically damaged or poorly installed. Choosing a reputable brand and a certified installer minimises this risk to a negligible level.

Are solar batteries recyclable?

Yes, around 95% of the materials in modern lithium batteries can be recovered and recycled at specialised facilities. As the industry grows, the UK recycling infrastructure for these units is expanding rapidly.

Are solar batteries VAT-free?

Yes, as of 2024, the UK government has applied a 0% VAT rate on the installation of domestic battery storage. This includes both new systems and retrofitting a battery to an existing solar array.

Basic Functions

Are solar batteries rechargeable?

Yes, they are designed to be charged and discharged thousands of times over their lifespan. They automatically recharge using either excess solar energy or off-peak grid power.

Can you recharge solar batteries?

Recharging is their primary function; they continually cycle throughout the day. They charge when energy production is high and discharge when your home needs power.
