The Benefits of Solar Power for Small Businesses (SMEs)

Installing solar panels for a small business (SME) is one of the most effective long-term investments you can make. The benefits extend far beyond simply having a ‘greener’ image:

  1. Significant Cost Reduction

The number one incentive for small businesses to switch to solar is the substantial reduction in operational overheads. By generating your own clean electricity, you immediately cut the amount you purchase from the National Grid.

  1. Energy Independence and Security

Relying solely on the grid leaves your business vulnerable to price fluctuations and power outages. Generating your own solar power for small business operations provides energy resilience.

  1. Environment, Social, Governance(ESG)

In today’s market, customers and partners increasingly value sustainability. Installing solar panels for small businesses is a visible, powerful statement of your commitment to the environment, significantly reducing your carbon footprint and enhancing your brand reputation. We understand the pressure that small businesses are often put under by customers and suppliers to comply with supply chain ESG directives. Reducing Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions can be crucial – solar may mean the difference between maintaining or losing a valuable contract.

How much is a solar panel installation for SMEs?

We know every small business is unique, and so is the cost of your solar project. The investment depends on a few key factors: the size of the system you need, where the panels will be placed, any necessary installation logistics (like scaffolding or electrical upgrades), the product specifications (and their warranties), and labour.

To ensure clarity, we start with a brief discussion of these variables to give you an indicative, no-obligation estimate. If you’re happy with that figure, we’ll then schedule a detailed site survey to provide a formal, detailed proposal tailored exactly to your business.

Typical system sizes and costs are:

  • 20kW – £25k
  • 30kW – £33k
  • 40kW – £40k
  • 50kW – £50k

Costs can vary depending on the installation requirements. To get a no-obligation quote, contact us today.

SME solar financing options

For small businesses with limited capital, we offer advice on alternative finance solutions like zero-upfront-cost Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Asset Finance to spread costs, and valuable tax incentives such as the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA).

What is included in your SME solar PV installation?

Surveys, Designs, and Planning

Prior to your installation our team will carry out all necessary surveys, planning applications and secure permissions from your energy supplier for your installation to go ahead.

PV Panels

Your panels will have a 25 year performance warranty as a minimum and will be sourced from a top tier manufacturer. The exact specification of your panel will be determined by your required output and whether you require a specific colour of module. See the types of solar panels we supply for your installation.

Inverter(s)

These convert the DC power you receive from your solar panels into AC power that your home or business can use. Your installation may require one inverter or a small series which will be decided at your pre-installation survey and will be based on the space available to mount your inverters and the size of the system that we are installing. If you’re a commercial client your inverter will be provided with a 20 year warranty.

Mounting, rail and/or trays

We will source and specify the correct mounting system to install your panels. There is a mounting system for almost every roof – tiles, slate or metal – and we also provide in-roof systems for new builds and projects that involve a re-roof. If you have opted for a ground mount system we will specify, source and erect your frame as part of your installation. The mounting system and roof type is one of the main variables in installation cost.

Electrical Installation (Insurance backed through NICEIC)

Our fully trained electricians will install all the required electrical equipment including cabling and string controllers to connect your panels and inverters and AC & DC isolators which can turn off the power if required. The installation also includes the AC supply which connects the inverter to the existing electrical generator and a generation meter which records the amount of electricity your installation is generating. Our team can carry out additional electrical works if required.

Scaffolding & Access

If your installation is roof mounted, it will require a temporary scaffold and access equipment; and it may also require internal netting. It is very important to us that our team remains safe on site at all times and working with the correct safety and access equipment is paramount. The access requirements for your site are one of the main variables in terms of project cost.

Miscellaneous

Customers may require structural assessments, detailed CAD drawings or schematics which can all be arranged as part of your project. We also support remote monitoring, which allows you to view the generation of your installation via an app and see how your system is performing.

Recommended Annual Service

We recommend an annual service to ensure that your systems remains in full working order and that you maximise your investment.

Planning Permission

Geo Green Power is ready to assist small businesses with all necessary planning requirements for their solar installations. While many commercial solar projects fall under Permitted Development Rights and may not require full planning permission, certain factors, like installing on a listed building, having the panels face a highway in a protected area (AONB), or exceeding specific height and size limits, will necessitate seeking formal permission. Recognising that navigating this bureaucracy can be time-consuming for a busy small business owner, we streamline the process by offering full assistance, including completing applications and supplying all documentation requested by the local planning authority, ensuring a quick and efficient path to approval.

Your Tailored Solar Solution

Choosing the right solar energy options for small businesses depends on several factors, including your building type, energy usage profile, and available roof or ground space. Our approach is simple: we provide a bespoke solution, not a off-the-shelf package.

Our process ensures you get the perfect system:

Initial Consultation: We begin with an expert consultation to understand your current energy bills, usage patterns, and your business goals.

Custom System Design: Our in-house design team creates a system tailored to your property’s specific layout and energy requirements, ensuring maximum efficiency and return on investment.

Seamless Installation: Our professional, fully qualified installation teams (again in-house) handle the project from start to finish, ensuring a swift and unobtrusive process with minimal disruption to your day-to-day operations.

Aftercare and Support: We provide comprehensive aftercare and maintenance services, ensuring your system performs optimally for its entire lifespan.

FAQs

Are solar panels worth it for small businesses?

Yes, solar panels are generally an excellent investment for small businesses, offering significant long-term savings on energy bills, a strong return on investment (often with a short payback period), and enhanced environmental credentials.

Will battery storage help my energy saving?

Yes, battery storage can significantly help your energy savings by storing cheap, off-peak electricity or excess solar power for use during expensive peak times, thus reducing your reliance on high-cost grid electricity.

How many solar panels will I need?

The number of solar panels you will need depends on your business’s total energy consumption, the available roof space, and the efficiency of the panels and inverter you choose.

Will my business have to close for installation?

No, most commercial solar installations are carried out with minimal disruption, allowing your business to remain operational while the work is completed, though access to the roof and certain areas will be required temporarily.

How long will the solar installation take?

The typical solar installation usually takes between 3 days and 2 weeks once materials are on-site, though the exact duration depends entirely on the system’s size and complexity.

Can I get financial support for a solar installation?

Yes, small businesses can access various forms of financial support for solar installation, including tax benefits like the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA), the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) for selling excess power, regional grants, green business loans, and zero upfront cost options like Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
